Director: Dev Benegal (India)
His first feature English, August (1994) is acknowledged as a landmark in contemporary Indian cinema. Second feature Split Wide Open (1999), chronicling the water wars in Bombay, premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Dev Benegal’s work represents modern Indian cinema, which is distinct from the realist or popular traditions of Indian cinema. The strength of his films has been their humor, his characters and his unique style, combining Indian narrative and western genre.
Vishnu, a young man driven by wanderlust and the need to escape his faltering family business, hits the open road in a decrepit traveling cinema. It’s a blend of genres and the celebration of India's stunning landscape and its rich love of movies.
