In the 1970s, when the Anti-Vietnam War movement had settled down and campus activism had drawn to an end, there was an atmosphere of lost emotion. Shin-ichi Abe, manga artist, who had moved from Kyushu to Tokyo, became a remarkable artist of "GARO", the comic magazine well-known for discovering and promoting many new manga artists. His candid style of storytelling, exposing his private life, love, friendship, frustration and suspicion, was entirely original. Miyoko, who would later become Abe's wife, was the muse of his work, and the inspiration for some of his short manga.
